FES Spring 2025 Outreach Wrapped

Posted on

School’s out for the Future Energy Systems outreach team! From April 1 to June 25, we delivered 96 classroom programs to nearly 2,500 students from 33 unique schools. That’s an average of over 8 visits per week!

“Become an Earth Doctor” was our most popular school program with 24 bookings. In this program, students learn about healing the Earth through land reclamation. With 18 bookings, a trial run of our new multi-session coding intensive “Engineering the Future with Micro:bits” takes second place. A close third with 13 bookings was “Are you Smarter than a Computer?”, where students explore the science behind machine learning.

Outside the classroom, we brought science demos to 390 students in Red Deer and over 1,200 families at Science Rendezvous. We also hosted 2 energy talks and 2 Earth Day events at local libraries, reaching an additional 158 members of the public. Online, we posted 16 new videos to our YouTube channel, racking up nearly 1,000 views. All in all, we brought energy education to over 6,200 people!

In recognition of their hard work, our Energy Explorers collectively received a Community Connections Award this quarter, while Future Energy Systems as a whole received an Emerald Award for the Education category. Way to go, team!

This summer, we’ll be welcoming a new crop of Energy Explorers, who will debut their research demos at Edmonton’s K-Days festival on July 25-27 – come see us there! Until then, enjoy the summer weather, and keep learning about the energy all around you.
