Energy Explorers and the FES team at the Community Connection Awards
On Monday, Future Energy Systems (FES) and the Energy Explorers were recognized with an award at Edmonton’s City Hall during the 2025 Community Connections Award ceremony.
The Community Connections Awards, presented by the University of Alberta, recognize individuals and teams at the U of A who have dedicated significant effort and resources to making the community a better place for everyone. The Energy Explorers were recognized in the Community Leader - Team category for outstanding collaboration with community partners in and around the U of A, Edmonton, and Alberta. Dr. Valerie Miller, Outreach & Engagement Lead at FES, accepted the award on behalf of FES and all past and present Energy Explorers.
Since 2022, FES has supported the science communication training of over 70 graduate students (and counting) working in energy-related research at the U of A. Energy Explorers challenges students to develop the skills to translate their research to different audiences. Students spend 20 hours developing individual research demonstrations, receiving one-on-one mentoring, and participating in a presentation day. Read more about Energy Explorers.
The award is appropriately titled; FES community partners and collaborators deserve equal recognition for the success and impact of Energy Explorers. Events and programs supported by the Edmonton Public Library, TELUS World of Science - Edmonton, Explore Edmonton, and other U of A departments have fostered a community of science communicators ready to challenge public perceptions about energy and academic research across their own professional and personal networks.
As for future community events, the Energy Explorers will be at the TELUS World of Science - Edmonton on Saturday, May 10, 2025, for Science Rendezvous! Later in the summer, they’ll be back at the K-Days Innovation Zone at the end of July.
