Sighting Preferences for EV Charging Infrastructure in Alberta

The widespread proliferation and adoption of Electric Vehicles (EV) poses significant challenges not just to the electricity distribution and generation system, but to peoples’ ability to travel long distances. While charging solutions are more robust for travel within the context of intracity commuting, there remains considerable work to be done to develop solutions for long distance intercity travel. This project will expand the research conducted by the ongoing FES project T06-A04 “Infrastructure Assessment for Electrical Vehicle Charging in the Town of Banff” on EV charging infrastructure preferences from its initial scope of Banff, to all of Alberta. Specific attention will be given on the location preferences of current and prospective EV drivers for charging infrastructure when on long commutes, the kind of travel that punctuates much of Alberta’s non-major metro areas. Additional consideration will be given for EV charging speeds and wait times.
