Bio

John Garcia received a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Materials Engineering from the University of Alberta where he graduated with distinction. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Science (MSc) in the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering where he specializes in the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured devices using novel semiconductor materials. His research activities involves forming nanocomposites of organic semiconductors (e.g. P3HT, carbon nitrides, functionalized acenes) with inorganic nanomaterials (e.g. TiO2 nanorods, CdS nanowires, plasmonic nanoislands) for photovoltaic and sensing applications. He is also investigating multi-element quinary and senary perovskite oxides for photocatalytic applications as well as coupled plasmonic-excitonic systems for sensing applications. He has extensive experience with a large variety microscopic and spectroscopic characterization tools including fluorescence microscopy (FM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman spectroscopy. In 2022, he was awarded the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship.
